The Collierville Mural
on Washington Street
Designed to capture the essence of Collierville’s historic charm, this mural quickly became a beloved focal point for residents and visitors alike. This project reflects the vibrant tapestry of Collierville’s past.
In 2009, Megan and Mark Davey of Davey Studio’s in Arlington, Tennessee were commissioned by Main Street Collierville to bring this mural to life. Nestled in the heart of the historic Town Square, this striking piece of public art greets everyone with a welcoming burst of color and nostalgia.
Vivid colors and intricate details bring to life images of storefronts, bustling markets, and the Norfolk Southern railroad, each element carefully chosen to honor the town’s enduring spirit. Local landmarks like the Collierville Christian Church on the left side are woven seamlessly into the composition, celebrating the contributions of generations who shaped Collierville’s identity.
The mural serves not only as a visual journey through time, but also as a cherished reminder of community pride, creativity, and the importance of preserving local heritage for future generations.
The mural was a project for the Leadership Collierville Class of 2009 in conjunction with Main Street Collierville.
Funding was made possible by a State of Tennessee Innovation Grant, a Community Fund Grant, and the Main Street Collierville’s Pennies for Preservation Fund.
A special thank you to Collierville Masonic Lodge #152 for allowing the placement of the Collierville mural on their building.
Collierville Masonic Lodge #152 GLTN F&AM History
Collierville Masonic Lodge #152 GLTN F&AM was Chartered on October 4 th , 1848, in the Village of Collierville, TN. The lodge members had held their meetings at several locations before the Civil War. The main location we believe was Northeast of the Current Square Location. That location/building was said to have been burned along with our early lodge records during one of the Battles of Collierville in the Civil War. On page 304 of the book written by a Collierville resident, Collierville, Tennessee, Her People and Neighbors by Clarene Pinkston Russell mentions a letter written on Nov 19 th , 1866, stating that they were fortunate enough to preserve the original charter. Still, their books, their Jewels, their furniture, and their lodge were destroyed. Again, after the war, it is said that we met at several locations around what is now the square as the town grew. One location can be found from reading the same book as above, on page 142, from 1892 – 1897, the lodge was adjacent to DeLaunay & Patrick Livery Stable.
Our current location was comprised of two, two-story structures as depicted on the mural. These two structures were built at some point during 1883 and 1885, from what has been found with handwritten deeds that are available. Collierville Lodge #152 purchased the Northern half on November 19 th , 1902 and the Southern Half on January 11th , 1923. The first Meeting was held on December 27 th , 1902, for the installation of our 1903 officers. The lodge was located on the upper floors, and various businesses existed on the lower floors through the years. Other organizations started their journey at the Masonic Lodge; the Order of the Eastern Star first started in 1923. The Ancient Order of United Workmen, Lodge #35. R.A.M #101. Knight and Ladies of Honor, Shelby County, TN Lodge #143. The Collierville Rotary Club was first organized on November 12th , 1935.
The lodge building is the one with blue top walls. This image was used to paint the Mural section on the South end of the wall, circa 1947, from notes.
The picture below is from the late 60’s to the early 70’s, before the Winter storm of January 12th , 1975, at 4 am, where we had a large snow and wind event. The weather event brought down the roof, collapsing into the lower floor and part of the outer southern wall.
Do you remember the Dollar General Stores being this old?
After the Storm of 1975.
After the Rebuild and rededication in 1976, while rebuilding 20 additional feet were added to the east end of the building.
We again did a Remodel of the exterior and Dining Hall in 2019 and 2020, with a rededication in 2020.
Current View with Night Time Lights, The mural was painted in 2010.
